ALCAIDESA MARINA COLLABORATES IN THE STUDY OF INVASIVE SPECIES OF THE APBA

The Bay of Algeciras and Tarifa, known for its rich marine biodiversity, faces environmental challenges linked to the presence of invasive exotic species in port infrastructures. Alcaidesa Marina, committed to sustainability and the preservation of the marine environment, collaborates with the campaign led by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras and Dr. José Carlos García Gómez, addressing this issue.

Under the title “Early Detection Studies of Exotic Species with Invasive Potential, with Special Attention to Rugulopteryx okamurae, in the Port Infrastructures of the Algeciras and Tarifa Bay,” the project will be carried out by the Marine Biology Laboratory of the University of Seville (LBM-US). Dr. José Carlos García Gómez will lead and coordinate this initiative, aiming to mitigate the ecological, environmental, and economic impacts generated by the presence of the Asian alga Rugulopteryx okamurae.

The main objective is to conduct a comprehensive study enabling the early detection of exotic species, especially Rugulopteryx okamurae, in the port infrastructures of the bay. This proactive approach seeks to reduce the risks associated with future bioinvasions, particularly those related to long-distance vessels and hull biofouling.

To carry out this ambitious project, circular structures will be implemented in various pontoons of the Alcaidesa Marina sports harbor, strategically distributed in three zones (interior, intermediate, and exterior, following the hydrodynamics gradient). These structures will allow an in-situ study of the settlement process of different species, providing crucial data for understanding and mitigating the problem.

The resulting action protocol from this study will provide the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) with an effective framework for the regular monitoring of the situation at sentinel stations. Alcaidesa Marina appreciates the efforts made by APBA and Dr. José Carlos García Gómez, which will significantly contribute to the preservation of marine biodiversity and the maintenance of environmental quality in our region.
